Integrator Combines Elan g! with Brand New Display Technology to Help Hoboken’s Hottest New Nightclub Compete with MYC’s Best

Reign nightclub goes with the highest bidder to deliver a first-of-its-kind AV installation.

PETALUMA, CALIFORNIA, December 5, 2014 – Hoboken, New Jersey is the newest unofficial borough of New York City, drawing Manhattan workers to its upscale downtown neighborhood full of trendy restaurants, bars and nightclubs. The owners of Hoboken’s newest nightclub, Reign, knew they needed to crate a unique experience to stand out among the area’s stiff competition. This meant designing an immense AV system using an ELAN g! system for control, Sound Tube Pendant speakers and subwoofers for put-it-anywhere audio and the first North American installation of a new 10-foot by 20-foot PrimeView Smart Film double-sided glass projection surface.

Integration firm Serious Audio Video knew that their bid would likely be the highest, at nearly $350,000, well above the $200,000 budget requested by the owners, but they also knew that no one else would match their vision and unique style for the club’s AV systems. The core of the lounge’s AV installation is a powerful ELAN g! system that automates the lighting, audio and video, giving the owners fast and easy control of the entire establishment from their smartphones. With more than 90 speakers and subwoofers producing 30,000 watts and a plethora of specialized lighting, tying everything together into a single easy-to-use interface was a crucial factor in the success of this installation.

“The ELAN g! platform allows us to focus on our clients’ needs and without worrying about overwhelming them with complicated interfaces,” said Casey S. Johnston, owner of integration firm Serious Audio Video. “It’s simple to use and can be run entirely from a smartphone or tablet if they choose, so they never have to leave the club floor to make adjustments to volume, lighting intensity or video content. It also gives them the easiest start-up and shut-down procedure for the club’s systems, since they can use a single “Open” or “Close” button that we programmed to turn entire systems on or off.”

According to Johnston, an installation of this caliber also requires special design. In this case, the integration firm created a unique vortex chandelier of Sound Tube pendant speakers that hang just out of guests’ reach on the second floor, and right above guests head on the first floor in an open overhang. “This specialized design took a lot of tinkering to perfect the installation, but the finished product is more than a simple AV system. An eye-catching arrangement of premium quality speakers and subwoofers reflects the lounge’s chic and trendy atmosphere, and when combined with the amazing PrimeView Smart Film projection display it projects an air of exclusivity that guests can’t find anywhere else in Hoboken or Manhattan.”

In fact, this was the very first installation of the see-through PrimeView Smart Film display in North America. It is so new that the instructions were only available in Cantonese, so they flew in one of PrimeView’s technicians from Hong Kong to help with the installation. The resulting screen sits just above the speaker chandelier on the third floor and can play any manner of digital video effects. With the ability to change the appearance of the glass from clear to frosted with the push of a button, the possibilities are nearly limitless and certainly push the club’s atmosphere to new heights.

“Night club installations regularly involve millions of dollars of equipment and this was our first night club project,” Johnston said. “We hit it out of the park so we are hoping to grow that aspect of our business and bring other owners the same level of functionality and unique design in the future.”

After Fire Ravages Their Home, Couple Upgrades to Whole Home Audio and Video with Niles and Elan g!

PETALUMA, CALIFORNIA, December 8, 2014 – After a fire struck the home of Abe and Elina Rodriguez, sending more than half of it up in smoke, newer local building codes mandated that much of their home be brought up to date during reconstruction. When they hired an architect to help rebuild the home and make the nearly 40 required adjustments, their interest in music and home audio came up. This led to a discussion about a whole home audio system and a recommendation to talk with local integrator Digital Logic Systems, who saw that the Rodriguezes were ready to upgrade to a whole-home AV system.

“We were very thankful that the security alarm woke us up, but it took us 20 years to get that house how we liked it and we watched most of it go up in flames,” said Abe Rodriguez. “When we set out to rebuild the home we basically had a clean slate to design and create our perfect house. For me, music is a huge part of my life and I had outfitted our home with extensive stereo systems on each floor. When I met Daniel Solly from Digital Logic Systems it was clear that he could deliver the type of whole-home music system I always wanted, and he said the best way to do it was with the ELAN g! system andNiles in-ceiling and outdoor speakers.”

But as these projects usually go, the system didn’t stop with audio. Solly won the bid over two competing integrators because of his superior knowledge and experience, in addition to the affordable nature of the ELAN g! system compared with other home control platforms. After drawing the designs and consulting with the architect, Solly and the Rodriguezes agreed that it was time for them to have a real home theater and integrated video and security throughout the house.

“Daniel gave us a real theater experience right in our home, and he was able to keep it affordable,” Rodriguez said. “When you add that to the whole-home audio and video, it’s a home run. I think DVR is man’s greatest invention, and now we can watch whatever we want, wherever we want, because all the TVs are connected to the system. We have the ELAN TV remotes in four rooms, so it works the same no matter where we are. We also use the ELAN mobile app on our iPhones and iPads to select music and set which rooms it will play in, which comes in especially handy when we are outside.”

The home now has 12 zones of audio with independent volume and on/off controls, including three surround sound systems in the theater, great room and basement family room. The theater and the great room use Niles speakers to deliver superior fidelity audio, which continues throughout the rest of the home in nine of the other ten zones, including the patio and deck. The great room and basement family room each have a wall-mounted 65” Samsung Plasma TV and the theater impresses with its JVC projector and 113” Screen Innovations Black Diamond projection screen.

“We did a lot of comparisons with different speaker brands and different speaker types, because I originally wanted big floor standing speakers,” Rodriguez remarked. “I was told they offer the best sound, but Daniel and my wife convinced me that in-ceiling speakers could not only provide amazing quality sound, but also virtually disappear from sight. This means we don’t have to worry about anyone touching them, we don’t have to clean them, there’s no potential for wires to move and we didn’t have to make compromises to position them in each room. Daniel designed the speaker layout very carefully to ensure every spot receives equal volume and dynamic range, and he said the Niles directional speakers helped achieve that.”

Likewise, the couple appreciates that there are no longer cable boxes in every room, and visible wires are a thing of the past. Instead, everything is located in a single equipment rack in the basement, where it is easy to access, maintain and upgrade if necessary.

Beyond consolidated control of audio, video and security that the Rodriguezes implemented, one of the best things about a modern home control system like ELAN g! is remote access that allows the integrator to troubleshoot issues without needing to visit the home. Rodriguez learned the importance of this when there was a small glitch during a party, and Solly was able to log in to the system and fix it quickly. The party didn’t skip a beat, and it was all thanks to a reliable, responsive integrator and a high performance home control system.

By integrating the security system into ELAN g! as well, the Rodriguezes can now view and monitor their home’s security while on-the-go with the ELAN g! mobile app. They know the importance of a security system since that’s what alerted them to their fire. In the future,  the couple may add consolidated control of their home’s heating and air conditioning, among other systems like motorized window shades, surveillance cameras and lawn irrigation.

Elan g! Eliminates Conference Room Headaches and Paves Way for Office-Wide Integration

PETALUMA, CALIFORNIA, December 9, 2014 – Business owners know that planning for the future is important, so whenever possible, it’s smart to build in flexibility to adjust to new needs and circumstances. This idea is especially important when it comes to office technology and infrastructure, which is why Permobil, a leading designer and manufacturer of power wheelchairs, has installed the affordable ELAN g! control system to integrate the AV system in a conference room, with potential to add digital signage and surveillance integration in the future.

According to integrator Aaron Lawrence, owner of Audio Video Elements based near Nashville, Tennessee, Permobil’s new ELAN system keeps with the new-age aura of the office, which he likens to the Google campus, famous for its lounge areas, in-office recreation and free employee cafeteria. “Permobil is a company that is always looking to the future,” he said, “and that extends from its employee policies to its product development to its office infrastructure. This installation wasn’t overly complicated or elaborate, but we were able to effectively solve their problems while setting them up to add greater enhancements down the line.”

One of the company’s main conference rooms relied on a 106” projection system to make presentations, but it never lived up to the expectations of those who used it. From the messy wired tabletop control panel to issues with the programming that meant the projector almost never turned off, the company decided it was time to try something new.  Lawrence suggested the ELAN g! system to them not only because ELAN developed one of the simplest control interfaces ever, but also because the system is highly flexible and would allow them to expand control beyond the conference room when they are ready to do so.

“Right now the room is approximately 100 percent better and more functional than it was,” Lawrence said. “We removed the projection system, which was hard to see because the screen sat in front of a large window and the room was usually brightly lit, and replaced it with an 84-inch JVC 4K display that will allow them to adapt to new video formats as they gain popularity. We suspended the TV from the ceiling to remedy the window issue, and also added two more Samsung 65” TVs on an adjacent wall so every seat in the room has a clear view of what is being presented.

“Once the design was agreed upon it was just a matter of making it easy to use. That’s where the ELAN g! system came in, and management couldn’t be happier with it. We were able to eliminate all the visible wiring from the room, and now the system is controlled from an iPad that is mounted on the table and can be dismounted if necessary. The four HDMI inputs built into the conference table make it easy for multiple people to share their ideas, requiring just a simple button press in the ELAN g! app to switch from one input to the next.”

One of the biggest selling points for management was the possibility to tie in building-wide systems in the future, such as digital signage situated in lobbies and common areas, and surveillance cameras that would make it easier to review security events or monitor building issues. This would allow the company to manage all the TVs in the building from a single interface, so they could power the entire AV system on and off together, as well as change the video being displayed. Lawrence also provided access to the ELAN g! system on several employees’ smartphones through the ELAN g! mobile app, ensuring that even if a technical issue arises with the main iPad, there is a backup to make things run smoothly.

“Being prepared for growth is a characteristic of a successful company, and Permobil is taking steps to increase the flexibility of their office for just that reason,” Lawrence continued. “Simplifying an office’s technology reduces employees’ frustration and helps promote increased efficiency, while also bringing a little bit of ‘wow’ factor with simple but powerful tools that many people haven’t used before. I expect that more and more companies will choose powerful, affordable control systems like ELAN g! for their offices in the near future and beyond.”

Homeowners Find That Living is Easy with Elan g!

Sarah and Mark Huff outfitted their new home with top-of-the-line tech to make daily life simpler, and were blown away at the power and simplicity of modern control technology.

PETALUMA, CALIFORNIA, December 15, 2014 – Building a new house affords the owners complete control over everything from the architectural design to the contractors to the materials used. When Sarah and Mark Huff cleared a decrepit caretakers hut off their 3-acre property in California, they had all the tools they needed to build a fantastic new 5,000 square foot home. The Huff family had operated a sawmill in the area for six generations over a span of more than 100 years, so they knew a lot of contractors and architects in the area. The one aspect they needed help with was the home’s automation system, which led them to meet Justin Brees of AM House.

“I worked in the electronics industry building motherboards for major manufacturers,” Sarah Huff said, “so I was well aware of home automation and real time control and I always wanted to have an automated home. We knew what we wanted to automate, but we didn’t know who to call, what to buy or how to go about installing a system. We probably interviewed more electronics integrators than any other type of contractor until we met Justin from AM House. He was the most knowledgeable person we spoke with, and he was the only one that really understood what we wanted and had the skills and means to make it happen. Once he showed us the ELAN g! system we were done interviewing.”

After meeting with Brees, the Huffs started to see just how big of a difference a modern home automation system could make in their daily lives. With the ELAN g! system they learned that they could control lighting, audio, video, window shades, security, surveillance and more, all from their smartphones and tablets. Mobile control was a big selling point for the Huffs because they travel a lot and have multiple buildings on their property, including horse stables where Sarah raises rescue horses that are brought in from as far away as Texas. Brees positioned one of the surveillance cameras outside the home to point directly at the stables so they could see if any horses were causing a commotion and then take appropriate action.

“Justin was amazing when it came to showing us what we could do, and it sort of made us couch potatoes!” Huff joked. “The system is so intuitive and easy to use that even my technophobe husband was able to just pick up the iPad and play around the day after installation was finished. After a day he was fully immersed and loved the system, and that was amazing for me. Beyond the simplicity, the system is more powerful than we imagined. The best example is that when we want to have a party, we can hit a simple ‘entertainment’ button that Justin created, and it automatically puts the lights and shades to exactly where we want them, turns on the stereo, turns on the porch TV, and then when someone comes to the door our front door camera view pops up and shows us who’s there. It couldn’t be easier.”

Proving that the right integrator makes all the difference, Brees spent time with the Huffs talking about how they go about their day in the home and used their real experiences and schedules to create scenes for lighting and window shades to make their home living ads comfortable and effortless as possible. The house utilizes a lot of distressed timber and glass, so there is a lot of light and therefore a lot of shades to control the light. Brees programmed individual shades to specific settings based on time of day, so in the living room for instance, at dusk certain shades go up while two others stay down to eliminate any glare on the TV.

“You can put the best technology in the world in a home, but if it’s not easy to use and the person installing it doesn’t know what they are doing 100 percent, it won’t be useful,” Huff added. “For us, there is so much glass in the house that the motorized window shades are a godsend. Justin even helped us with things outside of his wheelhouse, like speaking with DirecTV about signal issues we had and helping AT&T install the modem. He also set up the entire home with these amazing speakers from Niles, which we didn’t even know about, and we’re so thankful he did. It’s a pleasure to have such high quality sound for all of our music and TV, especially outside.”

Other special features include a special “Mark” button that Mark can press while still in bed in the morning to turn on certain hallway lights, but not bedroom lights, so he can walk down to the home’s gym without waking Sarah. On the expansive back porch that includes two separate seating areas, multiple Niles speakers and a TV, even the water and fire centerpiece is controlled through the ELAN g! app.

What’s more, the Huff’s daughter and son-in-law live in a connected guest house that runs on it’s own ELAN g! system. They have more family that lives nearby as well, so the house is a regular destination for family gatherings, and having quick and easy control of all their home’s subsystems makes hosting such parties a breeze. Nobody ever has to get up from the table to change the lighting or music, so the whole family can enjoy the night without missing a beat.

“Something that might not get enough attention is the remote access to the security system, and I love it,” Huff continued. “If the alarm goes off, we can log in no matter where we are and see what is going on in real time. Between the security system and the cameras, we’re never more than a few taps away from our home. The ELAN g! system helps us stay connected and worry free.”

New Jersey Sports Bar Installs Massive AV System Just in Time for Last Year’s Super Bowl

Serious Audio Video shows Kilroy’s Sports Bar & Grill how easy ELAN g! makes it to control 75 TVs, nearly 40 speakers and the lighting system.

PETALUMA, CALIFORNIA, December 18, 2014 – Sports bars often have extensive AV installations with advanced AV routing and control, but not many of them have 75 TVs. The immense system, which includes 37 speakers and an ELAN g! control system, is what sets apart Kilroy’s Sports Bar & Grill in Carlstadt, New Jersey.

The restaurant opened in early 2014, just in time for football’s biggest game, the Super Bowl, right next door at MetLife Stadium. The timing was crucial because it sits less than a mile from the stadium where the Denver Broncos and the Seattle Seahawks were set to face off, and the installation crew from Serious Audio Video was able to complete the entire job from the first phone call to the last wire in just four weeks, leaving the owners two weeks to prepare for the big game.

“We got a call six weeks before the owner needed the restaurant fully operational for the big game, and we walked into basically an empty space,” said Casey Johnston of Serious Audio Video. “They only knew that they wanted a ton of top-quality TVs and speakers, and that it needed to be easy so the staff could change channels on the fly. We got to work immediately and showed the owner how the ELAN g! system could give him simple iPad and iPhone control of the entire place. Once he saw how easy it is to use the mobile app he was sold.”

Over the next four weeks the team purchased and installed more than 75 Sharp Aquos TVs, ranging from 50”-80” using Strong and Peerless wall mounts and Crimson ceiling mounts. Four of the 80” displays are arranged in a stadium-style square hanging above the bar, while the rest blanket the entire establishment in glorious HD sports entertainment. There is barely a space on the walls that doesn’t have a TV, and every seat in the house has a view of at least half a dozen TVs.

The system is completed with a Lutron lighting system, nearly 40 Sound Tube pendant speakers, a pair of Episode outdoor speakers and a bevy of DirectTV receivers that offer patrons every televised sporting event that is available in the U.S.

“If someone comes in and wants to watch a baseball game from the west coast or a tennis match that is being broadcast by DirecTV, they can put it up on any TV in less than 10 seconds,” Johnston said. “The beauty of this AV installation is the responsiveness and ease of use of the ELAN g! system that gives the owners and staff instant control and the ability the instantly respond to their guests’ requests. There’s no need to point a remote at a particular TV or walk around to see what number a TV is, it’s all shown very simply in the ELAN system and takes almost no time to choose the TV and change the channel, even if they are standing on the other side of the restaurant. The wall-mounted iPad is always there behind the bar and the owner loves using the ELAN g! mobile app on his iPhone as well.”

In addition to traditional restaurant seating and the bar area, Serious Audio Video created a unique lounge area with three luxurious leather couches that face an incredible wall of seven 50” TVs and four 80” TVs mounted above a built-in gas fireplace. This special area can now be reserved for Sunday football games and earns the owner a premium price, as well as providing regular patrons a relaxing area throughout the week. Combined with the high quality menu and 20 beers on tap, this is a bar that stands out above the area’s competition.

“The lighting integration was icing on the cake for this bar, and the way we programmed everything to turn on or off with the push of a button makes it run like clockwork,” Johnston said.

Indeed, the installation team made it easy for the owners to set up and close up shop by programming a single button in the app to turn on every light, TV, speaker, satellite box and rack compone
nt when they open in the morning and turn everything off when they close for the night. A Planar 17” touch screen serves as an additional control interface while doubling as a POS terminal. The entire system is connected to two Panamax M5400PM power conditioners to ensure smooth operation.

“Now, the bar is ready to go for the big game in 2015, even though it won’t be played at MetLife Stadium,” Johnston said. “Fans will still be able to catch all the action on the 75 TVs.”
