New Jersey Sports Bar Installs Massive AV System Just in Time for Last Year’s Super Bowl

Serious Audio Video shows Kilroy’s Sports Bar & Grill how easy ELAN g! makes it to control 75 TVs, nearly 40 speakers and the lighting system.

PETALUMA, CALIFORNIA, December 18, 2014 – Sports bars often have extensive AV installations with advanced AV routing and control, but not many of them have 75 TVs. The immense system, which includes 37 speakers and an ELAN g! control system, is what sets apart Kilroy’s Sports Bar & Grill in Carlstadt, New Jersey.

The restaurant opened in early 2014, just in time for football’s biggest game, the Super Bowl, right next door at MetLife Stadium. The timing was crucial because it sits less than a mile from the stadium where the Denver Broncos and the Seattle Seahawks were set to face off, and the installation crew from Serious Audio Video was able to complete the entire job from the first phone call to the last wire in just four weeks, leaving the owners two weeks to prepare for the big game.

“We got a call six weeks before the owner needed the restaurant fully operational for the big game, and we walked into basically an empty space,” said Casey Johnston of Serious Audio Video. “They only knew that they wanted a ton of top-quality TVs and speakers, and that it needed to be easy so the staff could change channels on the fly. We got to work immediately and showed the owner how the ELAN g! system could give him simple iPad and iPhone control of the entire place. Once he saw how easy it is to use the mobile app he was sold.”

Over the next four weeks the team purchased and installed more than 75 Sharp Aquos TVs, ranging from 50”-80” using Strong and Peerless wall mounts and Crimson ceiling mounts. Four of the 80” displays are arranged in a stadium-style square hanging above the bar, while the rest blanket the entire establishment in glorious HD sports entertainment. There is barely a space on the walls that doesn’t have a TV, and every seat in the house has a view of at least half a dozen TVs.

The system is completed with a Lutron lighting system, nearly 40 Sound Tube pendant speakers, a pair of Episode outdoor speakers and a bevy of DirectTV receivers that offer patrons every televised sporting event that is available in the U.S.

“If someone comes in and wants to watch a baseball game from the west coast or a tennis match that is being broadcast by DirecTV, they can put it up on any TV in less than 10 seconds,” Johnston said. “The beauty of this AV installation is the responsiveness and ease of use of the ELAN g! system that gives the owners and staff instant control and the ability the instantly respond to their guests’ requests. There’s no need to point a remote at a particular TV or walk around to see what number a TV is, it’s all shown very simply in the ELAN system and takes almost no time to choose the TV and change the channel, even if they are standing on the other side of the restaurant. The wall-mounted iPad is always there behind the bar and the owner loves using the ELAN g! mobile app on his iPhone as well.”

In addition to traditional restaurant seating and the bar area, Serious Audio Video created a unique lounge area with three luxurious leather couches that face an incredible wall of seven 50” TVs and four 80” TVs mounted above a built-in gas fireplace. This special area can now be reserved for Sunday football games and earns the owner a premium price, as well as providing regular patrons a relaxing area throughout the week. Combined with the high quality menu and 20 beers on tap, this is a bar that stands out above the area’s competition.

“The lighting integration was icing on the cake for this bar, and the way we programmed everything to turn on or off with the push of a button makes it run like clockwork,” Johnston said.

Indeed, the installation team made it easy for the owners to set up and close up shop by programming a single button in the app to turn on every light, TV, speaker, satellite box and rack compone
nt when they open in the morning and turn everything off when they close for the night. A Planar 17” touch screen serves as an additional control interface while doubling as a POS terminal. The entire system is connected to two Panamax M5400PM power conditioners to ensure smooth operation.

“Now, the bar is ready to go for the big game in 2015, even though it won’t be played at MetLife Stadium,” Johnston said. “Fans will still be able to catch all the action on the 75 TVs.”

Elan g! Automation Brings Ultimate Game Room to Life!

PETALUMA, CALIFORNIA, December 22, 2014 – In the 1960s, pinball machines were such a major force in consumer culture that one of the era’s most popular songs was The Who’s 1969 hit Pinball Wizard. For one Lexington, Kentucky homeowner, that era lives on in his own professional-level home arcade with more than 50 classic and antique pinball and arcade games that all come to life at the push of a button through the ELAN g! System.

After a few years spent dealing with an older RTI system that wasn’t up to the task, the homeowner experienced the ELAN g! system at a friend’s house and was blown away at how much more powerful and easier to use it was. The friend introduced him to Bob Wolf, owner of Winchester, Kentucky-based American Residential Technologies. After discussing a bit of nostalgia, the owner and Wolf had decided that the home desperately needed an upgrade. Now more than 30 TVs, 23 zones of audio and all of the arcade games are connected to the ELAN g! system, and can be turned on and off right from the owner’s iPad!

“This project is a very unique combination of new technology and old technology,” Wolf said, “and I imagine that it’s more advanced than any commercial arcade was when many of these games were new. One of the issues we were able to solve was how to turn on more than 50 games at once, because it creates a huge power draw to start them all at once and could easily trip the circuit breakers. We programmed a custom “Entertain” button in the ELAN interface that turns the entire basement on gradually, so that within 3-4 minutes all the games, TVs, amplifiers and speakers are on and the whole area becomes an incredible game room, like none I’ve ever seen in a home.”

To complete his ultimate game room, the owner installed a full bar, two duckpin bowling lanes, more than 20 TVs ranging from 32” to 55” and 20 speakers. With the TVs and speakers connected to the ELAN g! system, it’s easy to set each TV to a different channel and set the speakers in separate zones to play distinct music or TV audio. All of this is accessed and controlled through a simple iPad app, so there’s never a moment when control is out of reach.

The TVs and speakers throughout the rest of the house are also connected with the ELAN g! system, including the home theater and the outdoor projector that makes summer a great time to enjoy a movie or sporting event in the back yard. There is even more entertainment outside, where the owner has a turf cricket field and a large bocce court that he and guests love to use when he throws parties.

“This home is definitely unique, and we were excited to make our client’s dreams come true with modern home technologies that turn complicated ideas into easy-to-operate systems,” Wolf continued. “It used to be quite a hassle to prepare for guests with all of the game room’s moving parts, but now an iPhone can operate every party essential and also make shutting down at the end of the night just as easy.”

The owner was so impressed with the ELAN system that he intends to expand it to integrate with the home’s lighting and HVAC systems in the near future.

New Luxury Town Home Community Debuts with Home Automation Package Anchored by Elan g!

LEED certified townhome community in Bethesda, Maryland is making simple, sophisticated home control standard in every new town home — and home buyers are loving it.

PETALUMA, CALIFORNIA, January 20, 2015 — If there was a more perfect alignment in philosophies between a developer and a solutions provider Jack Rainey of Chesapeake Systems Services (CSS) (www.csscorp.us), had never seen it before.  “Last year, when we began working with EYA (www.eya.com) on their new Little Falls Place townhome community in Bethesda, Maryland, the developer made it very clear to us that they wanted to provide buyers of the new townhomes with the ultimate contemporary lifestyle experience.”

Since 1992, EYA has built its name and reputation developing more than 4000 innovative homes in more than 30 urban neighborhoods across the Washington, DC metropolitan area, tackling some of the region’s most challenging sites along the way. The developer’s unique combination of walkable neighborhoods, thoughtfully planned spaces, and timeless architecture has earned it more residential and land-planning awards than any other homebuilder, including twice being named America’s Best Builder.

Each residence in EYA’s Little Falls Place townhome community features three floors and includes a two-car garage, private elevator, balcony and a rooftop terrace with a premium outdoor kitchen. The two different home models, named Berkley and Carlton, offer up to 2,635 sq. ft. of interior living space and 1,325 sq. ft. of exterior living space.  All appliances, materials and trims are premium quality, and each home has three bedrooms, two full baths and two half baths.

Rainey demonstrated the ELAN g! Entertainment and Control System to EYA management and the result was love at first sight.  “They made the decision right on the spot to include a basic Home Automation Package built around the ELAN g! System.”  That basic package included the ELAN HC-4 System Controller pre-loaded with the home page and messaging app; a security interface; HVAC interface; an enhanced wireless network that included an 802.11n high powered access point, 5 port network switch, as well as RS-232 connectivity for up to four on-board systems; and a computer/tablet interface.  Home buyers could upgrade from there according to their desires, needs, and budget adding on more features such as multi-room audio and video, whole-home lighting control, motorized window blinds, surveillance cameras, motorized door locks and even a home theater.

As a direct result of including the basic package with the price of the townhomes, EYA has already sold 20 of the 30 market-rate town homes that went to market with prices beginning at $1.5-million.  “More amazing is the fact that 50% of the buyers upgraded from the basic home automation package to add on whole-home distributed audio and lighting controls.  The developer couldn’t be more pleased with the results than they are and, for us, we demonstrated the value of our service to a very important client.”

According to Rainey, CSS has been working with EYA for more than ten years and has been selling optional home automation packages for the last four years.  “Our success in selling systems on an optional basis is what helped to convince EYA to go with our recommendation to make a basic automation package a standard part of the Little Falls project.  We really function as EYA’s technology solutions partner when it comes to designing smart home systems on their projects.  We’re viewed as their true automation specialists and not simply as a security based automation company — and there is a world of difference between the two levels of service.”

And, while CSS does offer other options for lower priced homes, the system of choice for any home priced above $700K is the ELAN g! System.  “The $700K priced home is the real threshold for true integrated whole home control systems,” he explained.  “Any home priced below $700K puts you in the realm of a security based solution that never goes beyond the entrance to the house — literally and figuratively!  Once you hit the $700K threshold you’re working with a different home buyer, one who appreciates and can afford of the significantly higher levels of integration and performance that, in our opinion, only the ELAN g! System delivers.  There’s nothing that comes close to ELAN g! in terms of ease of installation, joy of use, reliability, remote future upgrades, and the uniform elegance of the user interface across all user platforms from the in-wall touchscreens to the smartphone or tablet.  The g! System’s GUI is head and shoulders better than anything else out there.”

Rainey is even more excited by the opportunity to incorporate the next generation of the ELAN Home Control Platform in future CSS system designs.  “The new Linux based ELAN platform will be a real eye-opener for our builder clients,” he emphasized.  “We can now create systems priced to appeal to customers that previously would have had to limit their choices to security based entry systems that go no further than the home’s entry way.  With the next generation of solutions being offered by ELAN we can offer really competitively priced packages that allow home buyers to connect to whole home audio, lighting, doorbells — the things that they all really want to be able to connect to and control.”

ELAN will showcase its smart home control technology at the 2015 International Builders Show (IBS) in Las Vegas, Nevada (January 20-22, 2015) at the Broan-Nutone LLC booth (#C4520).

Smart Systems Technologies Creates Home Automation Systems That Help Builders Sell More Homes

A world full of smartphones, smart cars, and smart tablets creates the need for new homes that are equipped with basic smart home automation systems.

PETALUMA, CALIFORNIA, January 14, 2015 — Jimmy Salloum, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Irvine, California based Smart Systems Technologies, Inc, (SST) remembers the exact moment that the light bulb went on and he realized that a sea change was about to transform his company’s business.

“It was 2011 and Standard Pacific Homes had come to us to help them market a 55 home development in Marina Del Rey, California called The Beach Collection at Latitude 33,” Salloum said.  “The tri-level townhome beach bungalows were inspired by Southern California’s “strand homes” and designed to offer the best of modern beach leaving.  Everything was perfect with these bungalows except for the fact that they weren’t selling as fast as Standard Pacific Homes expected.  They asked us for ideas and we suggested they include a basic Home Automation Systems Package with the purchase of the units.  They did.  The bungalows started selling.  And we realized that our business was about change dramatically — and for the better.”

Salloum and SST President Craig Curran created a special Home Automation Systems Package built around the ELAN g! HC-4 System Controller.  The package also included a vandal-resistant camera, two programmable thermostats, one three-button lighting control switch, three one-button lighting control switch, one Apple Extreme Wireless Network Router, one 16GB WiFi Apple iPad, one TV interface, and two viewer licenses.  The builder also began to pre-wire all of the homes for audio and, in some cases, included speakers.

“As soon as the prospective homeowners listened to the demonstration of the smart home automation package, the units began to sell,” Salloum explained.  “Frankly, we were blown away by the impact these systems had on the buyers decision making.  Even more telling for us as a systems integration company was the fact that 80% of the home buyers upgraded from the base home automation package to add speakers, head-in equipment, and the full-on integration of the ELAN g! System in to the entire audio-video system.”

Not surprisingly, one of the key benefits that appealed to these homebuyers was instant gratification, Salloum explained.  “This is one of the key strengths of the ELAN g! System.  It delivers instant everything without the 10-15 second delay that other home automation systems have and that’s a huge difference.  Imagine turning on the light button and having nothing happen for up to 15 seconds.  That’s an insane amount of time to wait when you turn on a light switch.  The homeowner will start pushing the button over and over again turning the lights on and off on a repeat basis.  With the ELAN g! System, there is absolutely no delay in performance.”

Two other critical reasons for the success of the ELAN based Home Automation Systems Package is that the system performs almost flawlessly and it can be updated remotely.  “The 55 units in the The Beach Collection at Latitude 33 all featured the ELAN HC-4 System Controller and we didn’t have one service call.”

Based on the initial success with Standard Pacific Homes, SST began working with their other builders and developers to offer similar automation packages.  The company works with a veritable Who’s Who of leading builders including, in addition to Standard Pacific Homes, K. Hovnanian Homes, The New Home Company, Taylor Morrison Homes, Richmond American, The Irvine Company, Pulte Homes, and Del Webb.  “In each instance, and working closely with the goals and objectives of each builder, we created home automation packages that were configured and priced appropriately for every class of home.  We have found that the demand for smart home control exists from buyers looking for homes priced from $700K and up,” Salloum explained.  “And, obviously, the higher priced the home is the greater potential there is to sell upgrades from the basic automation package.  For homes priced at or around $700K the upgrade take is 10-20%.  At the $1-million level the uptake rate goes to 20-30% and the $2-million level the rate really jumps to 50% or more.”

One of the reasons why SST likes working with ELAN, beyond the performance of the system itself, is the fact that it is part of a bigger company that can meet a larger number of their AV/IT needs.  “When you work with ELAN, you are working with Core Brands, which is part of the event bigger Nortek Technology Solutions Group, which is part of the bigger still Nortek, Inc.  We install a lot of other products made by Core Brands, and in the future we plan to specify and install even more.”

Looking at ahead to the immediate future, Salloum is excited to begin working with the new ELAN g1 System, which is available in three very affordably priced configurations. “This is going to be a real game changer for our business, our builder clients, and, ultimately, for home buyers who, until now, still have felt that an automation system was beyond their reach.  The ELAN g1 System essentially allows us to talk to home buyers that would have been interested only in a lower priced security based automation system.  With the g1 system these same customers can now seriously consider an affordably priced entry level system that opens them up to whole home control and distributed audio, not to mention everything else that g! connects to and controls.”

With over 13 years of experience and awards from Pulte Homes, Standard Pacific Homes, K. Hovnanian Homes, and more, home buyers can rest assured that SST will deliver the Southern California Smart Home solution of their dreams.  The company’s customer service team thrives on providing the highest level of service and support through its service technicians and technically trained office staff.  SST’s technical staff is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to support any security monitoring needs.  SST’s customer service department is dedicated to giving the customer 110% all day every day. The company’s corporate headquarters is in Irvine, California and it maintains satellite offices in both Tucson and Tempe, Arizona.  For more information, visit www.sstun.com.

19th Century Architecture Meets 21st Century Elan g! Technology in Artisan Art Gallery

The Copper Fox Gallery combines a circa 1860s home, a variety of beautiful handmade art pieces and modern technologies to create a one-of-a-kind buying experience.

PETALUMA, CALIFORNIA, January 21, 2015 – When David and Linda Fox decided to open a second art gallery in Franklin, Tennessee, they wanted it to be different than the high-end gallery that Linda curates. After finding a gem of a property, a local home built in the 1860s, David knew that combining a historic American home with 21st century technologies would allow him to run a successful high-traffic art gallery. Using only an iPad, David can control The Copper Fox’s lighting and music with the ELAN g!system and mobile app, access the security and surveillance systems and conduct transactions with Square technology.

“I wanted the gallery to be techy behind the scenes,” Fox said, “but present a rustic, historic ambience that visitors can’t find at other galleries. Now with the ELAN g! system, my security system and Square’s transaction technology, I can literally run the entire store from my iPad. It’s been an incredible boon to be able to adjust lighting and music on the fly, so if I notice it’s an extra bright day or the music got a bit too loud, it takes about ten seconds to adjust everything, and I don’t have to leave the floor!”

Working with local electronics integrator Audio Video Elements, David was able to strike the perfect balance between technology and artistry. Aaron Lawrence, owner of Audio Video Elements, was careful to keep every component hidden from view, so as to leave the art as the centerpiece with the technology providing the backbone. Using a small ELAN system controller, the ELAN g! iPad app, Lutron lighting, Panamax surge protection, Speco Technologies cameras, a Digimerge 16-channel DVR and audio components from JBL, Monitor Audio and Marantz, Lawrence made the store seamless to operate.

“In addition to the simple lighting and music control, the iPad affords me the opportunity to make house calls and generate more sales,” Fox continued. “Now when a client is interested in new pieces I can bring the pieces to their home, show them how they would look, and they can buy right there with a credit card. There’s no checks or receipts to write, so it makes it easy for me to sell and easy for the client to buy. What all of this technology really has done is remove any barriers between my clients and the art. When they walk into the store they don’t know that the lighting and music is set to very specific levels, or that I can change it at a moment’s notice without leaving the gallery floor. All they know is that the room is inviting and relaxing, and that the art is gorgeous. That’s how I think technology should work, accenting our surroundings and not dominating them.  When you are in a restored 150-year-old house, retaining a tech free visitor experience with all the benefits of behind-the-scenes technology just makes sense.”

According to Fox, The Copper Fox processes a lot of transactions for an art gallery, up to 500 a month. The technology he chose allows him to move freely throughout the store without worrying about shoplifters or missing a sale, since they can transact right out on the floor if the patron desires.  Everything about The Copper Fox is unique, including the name, which was recommended to David by a friend after he witnessed the new copper roof that was installed during renovations.

While the security and surveillance systems are not yet tied into the ELAN g! system, David has a separate iPad app that allows him to access each system wirelessly. One of the reasons David and Aaron agreed on the ELAN g! system is that it can be expanded in the future to include the gallery’s climate controls, additional lighting, and the existing security and surveillance systems. Besides that, the ease of use was a important selling point.

“Almost anyone can use the ELAN control system the first day it’s installed with no training or instruction,” Aaron Lawrence said. “I knew it would be a perfect fit for The Copper Fox, as multiple employees would need fast and easy control of everything in the gallery. It’s truly amazing that David can run the whole store off of his iPad, and I’m glad to have been a part of his successful new business.”
